Coconut candy
Upon mention of the Mekong Delta’s Ben Tre Province, people often think about coconuts. Almost everywhere in the region is bounded by limitless coconut trees from Bao and Minh to An Hoa islets. From coconut trees, coconut fruits and coconut water, locals make many foods and products, of which coconut candy is the most famous.
The first specialty to be mentioned is coconut candy, which is very famous nationwide. The ingredients of coconut candy include coconut water, malt syrup and sugar. First, makers have to extract the inside cover then grind it and put it into a light fabric pad to filter and extract the water milk. Then the coconut milk is mixed with malt syrup and water and boiled. The maker has to stir up the mixture steadily until it solidifies. After that, the solidified coconut soup is put onto a plate or a frame and then cut into square shapes as coconut candy. Finally, makers have to cover each piece with wax-paper. Sometimes other fruit flavors or peanuts are added to meet diverse tastes.
Ben Tre Province is also famous for coconut candy making villages such as Tan Thach, Mo Cay Town and the area around Ham Luong Bridge.
Apart from making candy, people also use coconuts to make conical hats, house roofs, juice, wine and even collages. Visiting Ben Tre, tourists can also admire many fine art products and jewelry made from coconuts such as handbags, wallets, hair-pins, masks, rings, necklaces, chopsticks and souvenirs such as shrimp, fish and tea cups.
